6 Tips for surviving your car trip.
By Vincent | October 2, 2007
If you are like the average man than you spent 67 minutes per day behind the wheel of your car. Let me ask you; do you suffer of neck, back or shoulder pain? This isn’t a coincidence. In a car you have limited space to move and because of this the chances increases that you’ll have more physical complaints in time.
Fire your armrest. Forget about laying your arm on the centre armrest or in the door rest. This is very stressful for the body, especially on longs trips. It’s much better to use your arms for shifting and steering, your moving space is already very limited. Use the space that you have.
Thumbs up. Hold your thumbs in the same upwards curve as your steering wheel. If you drive with one hand or hold your hands in a different position than you’ll increase the force on your arm muscles.
Blow up your seat. If you’re lucky you have a car with adjustable/inflatable car seats. With adjusting the sides of your seat in a natural curve you’ll lessen the force on your spine. If you are not so lucky buy a inflatable cushion.
Use a mirror for your blind spots. Okay okay, I know, you’re not a senior but placing little (sticky) mirrors on your side mirrors helps reducing the force on your neck.
Empty your pockets. A big fat wallet can be really cool but not when you’re sitting on it. If you are sitting crooked this enlarge the force on your lower back.
Close the window. Or keep it open the whole drive, either one. If you frequently open and close the window the cold temporary airflow passes your neck which will result in stiff muscles.
